WHEELING – Burned debris left behind from a fire that occurred underneath the Market Street Bridge was removed Wednesday by a contractor.

That work now paves the way for the West Virginia Division of Highways to inspect the bridge that spans Wheeling Creek to see if there was any significant damage from a June fire underneath the bridge.

Workers with Graham Demolition of Parkersburg were on site Wednesday to clean up the mess. Burned remnants of a homeless encampment that was located under the bridge were placed into large bags and then lifted via a line connected to the arm of a small backhoe.

The backhoe placed the full bags into the back of a trash hauler sitting in front of the bridge entrance.

The contractor received help from a worker with the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection’s Rehabilitation Environmental Action Plan.

Tony Clark, District 6 engineer for the West Virginia DOH, said now that the debris has been removed, the DOH can do its work.

“We don’t have a date at the moment as to when the inspection will take place. The debris has been removed and we can move forward with an inspection now,” he said.

One of the DOH’s biggest concerns is how much damage may have occurred to the decking of the bridge as it is made from an experimental fiberglass-like product.

The fire happened on June 7 at about 11:30 p.m. The bridge has remained closed to vehicle traffic since then, though pedestrians still can use it.

The Wheeling Fire Department’s Bureau of Fire Investigations is investigating the fire.
